Practice notes

Melanie is admitted as a South African attorney and as a solicitor (non-practising) of the Supreme Court of England and Wales. She currently specialises in commercial litigation and alternative dispute resolution, in contractual, delictual and administrative law matters. Before joining the firm, Melanie spent some time practising in the Africa focused, cross-border division of another leading South African law firm.

Her recent experience includes:

  • Acting successfully for a leading telecommunications operator in an application for access to information in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act.
  • Advising a consulting company in a contract and tender dispute with the Gauteng Department of Health. The consulting company was successful in the South Gauteng High Court and in appeals launched by the Department in the Supreme Court of Appeal and Constitutional Court.
  • Advising a consulting company in a contract and tender dispute with the Gauteng Department of Transport.
  • Advising a leading facilities management company in a multi-million rand tender dispute instituted by an unsuccessful tenderer, judgment pending.
  • Providing complex procurement, engineering and construction advice to a major parastatal in relation to a multi-million rand ongoing infrastructure project.
  • Acting for a major parastatal in arbitration proceedings against its former insurer. 
  • Advising a leading private security company in relation to administrative justice, various municipal laws and its relationship with various municipalities.
  • Acting successfully (settlement) for the CEO of a major waste management company in relation to employment and shareholder issues.
  • Being part of the team that advised successfully (settlement) a parastatal in a major engineering related dispute arising from the collapse and total destruction of a shiploader at South Africa's only iron ore export port.
