Hunter heads up the firm’s financial services department and is part of the firm’s tax department. He specialises in all areas of pension fund law, including pension fund rules, governance, disputes and product development. His tax background gives him the competitive edge in this regard.
His experience working for an international bank and insurer has given him a thorough understanding of tax law, particularly in structuring commercial transactions to ensure tax compliance and tax efficiency. Hunter also understands benefit administration and his investment knowledge equips him to advise on investment processes.
Hunter's recent experience includes:
- Advising a fund with assets of ZAR15 billion on a restructure of the fund.
- Litigation in regard to the curatorship of a pension fund administrator.
- Advising a pension administrator on administration processes.
- Advising and assisting a fund in the appointment of a new benefit administrator.
- Conducting a forensic investigation into an asset manager with various fund invested pension assets.
- Assisting and advising clients on the “thin capitalisation” rules.
- Advising on VAT related issues on the purchase of a mining plant.
- Advising on the re-structuring of a family-run business and the internationalisation of the business.
He contributed the chapter on South Africa for the book
Buy-outs and Buy-ins: The Elimination of Defined Benefits Pension Scheme Liabilities.
Hunter is a regular speaker at pension fund conferences on all issues including tax particular to pension funds and individuals, and is a past national chairperson of the Pension Lawyers Association. He sits on six boards of trustees.
