The few square kilometres between 5th Street and West Street, just a block away from Sandton City, may well be called legal city by now, since most of the major law firms are based there. The latest firm to move into new headquarters on Fredman Drive is Routledge Modise Attorneys.
With effect from 24 November 2006 Routledge Modise will occupy 7 500 m2 of space within a stone’s throw of most of the other major law firms, the JSE, Advocates’ Chambers and all the big hotels in Sandton. Simultaneously with the move the firm is undergoing a rebranding which includes the shortening of its name from Routledge Modise Moss Morris to Routledge Modise.
Says Terry Mahon, chairman of the firm: “We thought long and hard about the name change. Initially Moss Morris was included in the name as that firm had a history of over 100 years, which went back in time almost as long as that of Routledges. The goodwill relating to Moss Morris has been fully absorbed and the new name, Routledge Modise, will be less of a mouthful. An innovative logo has been designed which shows that the firm is moving with the times.”
“As a result of the incredible growth of the firm and anticipated ongoing growth it was essential to move to new premises. The new building on 22 Fredman Drive will be one of the most modern and attractive buildings in South Africa. It has state-of-the art conference facilities, where we will offer seminars and workshops, as well as video conferencing for the benefit and use of our clients. And there will be plenty of secure parking for clients and for our growing staff compliment.”
“We have invested considerable time, money and effort in training candidate attorneys, in particular BEE candidates, to become skilful attorneys. Routledge Modise is committed to becoming a truly South African law firm in which all racial groups and genders are appropriately represented. We already have a level 7 accreditation from Empowerlogic, which means that we are 50% BEE compliant. But we have set ourselves further ambitious goals on BEE, confident that we will meet and surpass them.”
Routledge Modise’s new building was designed by Paragon Architects and developed by Zenprop Holdings (Pty) Ltd. The interior was designed by Stephen Rich.

The official launch of the building will be in February 2007.
