Rail

The transport sector in South Africa, as well as globally, has increased rapidly within a short period of time. The main challenge facing rail transport in South Africa is the capital expenditure required to rejuvenate ageing rolling stock and infrastructure.

The most recent substantial project, the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link, has introduced the rail subway concept to the South African society and with it will come many changes in the other transport areas, particularly road transport. The Gautrain project includes international joint ventures involving not only transport, but engineering, construction, financing and the like, which emphasises the requirement for extensive legal knowledge in order to facilitate and conduct such mayor operations successfully.

We act as legal advisors to the national operator of freight rail in South Africa involved in the rail and commodity export industry, ranging from the transport of coal, iron ore, manganese and other minerals from the mines to various ports via their respective export channels.
